“If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it shall be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” — John 15:7-8 MEV
This is one of those verses you read, and you feel like you’re remaining in Jesus and you have his words in you – – and yet you don’t get everything you pray for. So this seems like an empty promise. But then, is it, really?
I don’t think before I came into this intimate communion with Christ in which I daily walk, that I was really in him or that his words were really alive in me. Of course I believe I was a Christian, and I was going to heaven, and I was able to give a defense of my faith, but I didn’t really know Jesus.
I had not been touched and overwhelmed by his endless love. I knew he was my Savior but I didn’t know him as the constant friend he has become – – I didn’t know him as everything to me, which is what he is now.
It seems when you come to know Christ in this way, his words do come alive in you – – his greatest command (to love) is poured into and over you and flows out from you, so that the closer you come to him – – and all your desire focuses on being close to him – – the more like him you become, and the more his love flows into and out of you.
It’s as if you’re being transformed into his very substance, into love. It’s no wonder the first Christians were called Christian – – little Christ — because they were becoming so much like Jesus.
So if your daily life is entirely Jesus, if the words that are alive in you are his greatest commands, to love God and love your neighbor as yourself, then what is your prayer? It’s always this: Jesus. You want more of him, and you want others to come to know him as you know him. And this, he is always happy to give you. You pray for Jesus, and Jesus is poured out on you. You pray for love, and love is poured into and out of you.
Thus: you ask for your heart’s greatest desire and it is granted to you, in Him!
